Abstract
One of the skin infections is caused by bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus which causes acne. One of the plants that has antibacterial properties is cassod leaf (Cassia siamea L.) because it contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tanins. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus in the gel preparation of johar leaf extract and to determine
there are differences in the composition of gum arabic and tragacanth in the gel preparation of johar leaf extract on the antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus aureus. One of the preparations that are suitable for skin infections is gel. The gel is considered to be more comfortable to use, causes a cold sensation when it contacts the infected skin, is easier to apply so that it spreads well.
The research method used is experimental in the laboratory. Cassod leaf extract was made into a gel preparation starting with a preliminary test of the extract against bacteria. The results obtained were a concentration of 3% cassod leaf extract gave the greatest inhibitory power of 23,83mm. The gelling agent used was gum arabic and tragacanth with a ratio of FI (10% : 2%), FII (11% : 3%), FIII (12% : 4%). The evaluation of gel preparations were organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion. Furthermore, all formulas were tested for antibacterial activity by the well method.
The results of the data obtained were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test. The results obtained in this study can be concluded that the gel preparations FI, FII, FIII meet the physical requirements of the gel. Antibacterial activity test showed that FIII was able to provide the highest inhibition of 14,18 mm.
